Whale
Watching From Mossel Bay
We took a boat trip from Mossel Bay on the "Romonza" to go & view whales out in the bay. The whales that we saw are called Southern Right Whales. "Southern" because they are found in the southern hemisphere & "right" because they were considered to be the right kind of whale for the whale industry's needs when they were being hunted many years ago.
As you can imagine it's not so easy to photograph whales in the wild. They tend not to stay up on the surface for too long. By the time you've pressed the button & the camera has focussed, the whale has disappeared below the surface again! The photos below are the best ones that we managed to get. There are a load of others which just look like photos of the sea. I've included some scans of some postcards so that you can see what the whales are supposed to look like.
We took some video footage on the trip & you can see a lot more on the video than you can in these photos. Hopefully some time soon we will be able to grab some still images from the video to put on this web page.
On the way back to the harbour we took a trip round Seal Island which you can see in the last few photos. The Island is packed full of seals & is rather smelly when you are sailing down wind of it!
